Sometimes there is too much choice; should it be the super sleek, aero performance Propel, the race ready, climb attacking TCR or a fun, lively and good all-rounder like the Contend SL? The best way to decide is to have a ride on them all and that’s just what Paddy did.

Here is Paddy’s review of all three bikes and yes, he did eventually buy one, although the search is still on for a race bike so a few more rides out on the TCR might be on the cards.

Paddy’s Demo Day – Giant Propel Advanced Pro 2

First I tried the Propel. In a nutshell it’s light, responsive and always wants to go fast. A little push on the pedals and acceleration is yours, this is definitely a racing bike! Super responsive on the undulating and winding roads around Kendal it’s a great ride but I might struggle with long days in the saddle as this bike just wants to go fast…….then faster again. If I was looking for a high performance road racing machine this bike would be perfect. I only rode the Propel Advanced Pro 2 for a couple of hours but the sensation of wanting to push the pedals and feel the response was irresistible.

Then I moved on to the TCR. I bought my first TCR more than 10 years ago and we have had a long and fruitful relationship being my bike of choice for many triathlons including age group qualifiers and European Championship races.

The new TCR Advanced Pro 1 has a carbon frame, still retains the same comfort but there is a racing wolf waiting to be unleashed. It maybe doesn’t have the same responsiveness as the Propel but is still more than capable as a race bike and is definitely raring to go! Sure-footed downhill and through the bends, light enough to accelerate up the hills, plenty of get up and go but comfortable enough for long days.

Paddy’s Demo Day – Giant Contend SL Disc 1

At the moment my priority is a replacement winter bike. The Contend SL Disc 1 is reliable and smooth with disc brakes for added control no matter what the weather, this could be the one! The Contend might not win any prizes in the weight category, although in its class it is still relatively light and lively, but most importantly for a winter bike it is a smooth and comfortable ride. The relaxed geometry makes for an ideal training bike, the Giant wheel/tyre combination gives a real sense of confidence and get it up to speed and it will stay there. It doesn’t tempt me to jump out of the saddle at every hill but instead smoothly spins me to the top.

I’ve been enjoying my Contend for the last few months and won’t be putting it away any time soon. A new TCR is on the radar but think a Propel might have to wait a little longer. Always nice to dream!
